Communication systems group is focused on theoretical and practical aspects of massive connectivity using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and core network technologies supporting IoT applications. The main topics of interest are:

  • Fundamental limits of massive connectivity:
    1) Finite-length information theory
    2) Short-packet error-correction coding
    3) Reliability vs latency trade off
  • Protocol design for massive connectivity:
    1) Physical layer design for massive IoT
    2) Random access and multiple access protocols
    3) Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC)
  • Localization methods in IoT:
    1) Fundamentals of wireless localization
    2) Indoor localization via wireless fingerprinting
    3) Localization and smart system design
  • IoT systems and technologies:
    1) Current standards: NB-IoT, LTE-M, EC-GSM-IoT
    2) 5G standardization: mMTC and URLLC
    3) LP-WAN solutions: IEEE 802.11ah, LoRA, SigFox, etc
  • Core network technologies for IoT:
    1) Software defined networking (SDN) and Network function virtualization (NFV)
    2) Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) technologies
    3) 5G Core Network architecture (slicing, virtualization)
  • IoT testbeds and experimentation:
    1) LTE/5G testbed using OpenAirInterface
    2) Wireless testbed using GNU Radio and USRP devices
    3) NB-IoT testbed using custom-designed NB-IoT nodes
    4) LoRaWAN testbed using custom-designed LoRaWAN nodes
    5) IEEE 802.15.4 testbed using Crossbow motes
